‘Edinburgh is probably the best city I could have chosen for my first big move. The main point of any metropolis is that it’s a public space, and I think Edinburgh is a lot more communal than it probably projects. There’s a lot of shared space, and it’s really walkable. It also feels incredibly safe compared to Bangalore. The freedom I have here has created such a significant shift in my mindset.

I feel most comfortable in the Meadows. There’s so much green space here, and so much of it is without restriction.

One of my favourite places is a record shop called Backtracks. I collect cassette tapes. The first time I went looking for them here, I went to a shop near the Royal Mile, and I didn’t feel like I was getting much help or interaction from the staff. The guy at Backtracks, though, who owns the shop – I got to talking to him, he picked out a few tapes for me, and he recommended other places to see in Edinburgh. We chatted for a long time, and I felt like I left with so much more than a cassette.

It’s a very liberal and socially conscious city. It does kind of raise my expectations for what a city should be.’
