‘The proximity to nature is something I began to appreciate more when I left and lived in different places without so much green space. I was like, “Oh my God, I’ve been so spoiled! How did I not take advantage or appreciate it when there are hills right on my doorstep?”


When I give my patented tour of Edinburgh for friends, I like pointing out the gold paving bricks that mark the old tollbooths and the city limits. I also like pointing out the place in the Grassmarket where the gallows used to be. And I’m like, “You see all these windows? People used to be very morbid.” They used to hire out the rooms above when there was a public hanging!’
