To me, Edinburgh is very much a city of firsts. It’s the first place that I ever lived independently, the first place I kissed anyone, had sex with anyone, and got drunk, as well as the first place I went on a date with my long-term partner. I remember describing it at the time – It felt like a dam breaking. For me, Edinburgh brought a lot of new beginnings. It’s the place where I began to work out that I was queer, and actually, the first place that I told someone.

I had been itching to live in a city since I was a teenager. I grew up in quite a small, seaside town in Northern Ireland, and I was like, “I need to get out of here.”

Edinburgh feels very safe compared to Manchester, where I live now. I don’t know if it’s the hubris of youth, but I used to be quite happy to walk through the Meadows at three in the morning. Honestly, I would probably still do that today.'
