‘Edinburgh is my home, and I’m always proud that it’s my home. Edinburgh is a village. People will chat to you on the bus, they will help you if your bag has dropped. I will help you if your bag has dropped. Someone bashed into my car last night, and he hung about waiting to tell me. He didn’t just drive off.
Victoria Street is my favourite street in Edinburgh. It’s only recently become touristy. I used to work in a clothes shop on Victoria Street, and when I started, it was so quiet. Everyone on the street was pals. There was a cheese shop, and a beautiful old brush shop like a proper old Victorian chimney sweep shop, a joke shop, and a pastry shop. We used to make little deals. Hamish from the cheese shop worked as a waiter at his second job, so I would steam his shirts for him, and in return I got cheese and oatcakes for my lunch.
In the summer, during the beginning of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the lighting crew go and brew their own keg at Stewart Brewing, and they convinced the Jolly Judge to take it and put it on tap. They call it the Tattoo Crew Brew. Then, for the month of August, they can run down to the Jolly Judge after the show to have one pint before closing time, and they drink their own keg over the course of the month!’
